Carbon cycling in lakes has been studied both in terms of the magnitude and global significance of carbon released to the atmosphere and carbon stored in the sediments. Interestingly, to the best of our knowledge there have been no studies examining whether instantaneous measures of carbon flux are directly related to how much carbon is being drawn down to the sediments. Here, we show that the saturation of CO2 in the water column is negatively related to the sedimentation rate. We, therefore, suggest that sedimentation should be explicitly considered as a factor directly controlling CO2 flux from freshwaters. Furthermore, we show that food webs and nutrients can alter CO2 flux by changing sedimentation. Oceanographers have long recognized the interaction between biota and sedimentation in the carbon dynamics of the ocean, a mechanism referred to as the biological pump. Our experiments rigorously test sedimentation and food web structure as factors controlling CO2 saturation and suggest a common framework for freshwater and marine systems. 相似文献

In this paper we demonstrate that, by investigating polyploid complexes in Asplenium, it is possible to locate the areas in Europe that are southern glacial rcfugia, and arc likely to have been so since the beginning of the Pleistocene during the consecutive cold and warm periods in Europe. Identification and conservation of these specific areas that serve as safe havens for plants, and perhaps animals, is of paramount importance for the maintenance of European biodiversity because Man's activities arc resulting in an ever-increasing loss of natural habitats and putting diversity at risk. The genus Asplenium in Europe comprises some 50 taxa: half of these are diploid while the other half arc polyploids derived from the diploids. All aspleniums in Europe are (small) rock ferns with high substrate specificity. Today, most of mainland Europe, Scandinavia and the British Isles has been colonized by polyploid Asplenium species, while the diploids that gave rise to these polyploids are distributed around (and more or less confined to) the Mediterranean Basin. In the tetraploids genetic variation is partitioned mostly between sites, whereas diploids show a high degree of genetic variation both within and between sites. The tctraploid taxa seem capable of single spore colonization via intragametophytic selfing, but the diploid taxa appear to be predominantly outbreeding. For most diploids at least two gametophytes, produced by different spores, have to be present to achieve fertilization and subsequent sporophyte formation for the successful colonization of a new site. This results in a slower rate of colonization. The formation of auto- and allopolyploid taxa from diploid communities appears to have been a recurrent and common feature in Europe. Minority cytotypc exclusion is likely to prevent the establishment of tetraploids within the diploid communities, but spores from tetraploids can establish populations outside the diploid communities. The differences between colonization abilities of tctraploid and ancestral diploid taxa, resulting from their different breeding systems, has prevented the merging and mingling of their ranges and led to the establishment of contact/ hybrid zones. This has resulted in the restriction of diploid populations to ancient glacial rcfugia and the colonization of the rest of Europe by polyploids. Mapping the current distribution of these diploid communities and comparing the genetic diversity within and between outbreeding diploid Asplenium taxa allows us to define the area, age and historical biogcography of these rcfugia and to assess their importance for present day genetic and species diversity in Europe. 相似文献

Temperature-mediated dynamics of planktonic food chains: the effect of an invertebrate carnivore 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. This study involves an examination of two- and three-trophic-level food chains at two temperatures (18 and 25 °C) in order to determine how the addition of a carnivore to a predator–prey system can alter the dynamics of populations and how this effect may be temperature mediated. The system consisted of phytoplankton, Daphnia pulex and the flatworm Mesostoma ehrenbergii .
2. Although the plant–herbivore system is inherently unstable at 25 °C, the addition of the carnivore led to a further destabilization of the Daphnia –algal dynamics at the higher temperature. No destabilization effect of the carnivore was noted at 18 °C. At the lower temperature, all populations persisted and the carnivore induced changes only in the age structure of the Daphnia populations rather than in overall biomass.
3. The differential effects of the carnivore at two temperatures can be attributed to shifts in the life history, physiological rates and the reproductive strategy employed by Mesostoma .

This study (1994) examines the distribution and abundance of puku ( Kobus vardoni Livingstone) in Kasanka National Park (area=470 km2 ) Zambia, following five years of anti‐poaching control. The puku is an important 'flagship' species for the park. Most puku were confined to a limited number ( n =19) of river floodplains and dambos (total area=20·29 km2 ) towards the centre of the park. Large areas of 'suitable' habitat contained few, if any animals. The total population was estimated to be 613 (confidence limits=414–967) with an average density of 35·93 km−2 on occupied sites. The population sex ratio was markedly biased towards females (mean=3·4 females to 1 male), but group sizes were similar to those recorded in other African studies. Male groups were on average (2·6), smaller than those of females (7·3). Males appeared to be particularly vulnerable to poaching. The distribution of puku reflected a patchy distribution of resources and a flexible social system. Puku numbers have increased two fold since the previous (1989) survey. Other species have faired less well. Further work is required to clarify dispersal mechanisms. Taylor's power law may provide a useful model for describing population dispersion. Kasanka is an important local refuge for this increasingly threatened species in Zambia. Metapopulation theory may be applicable to puku because of their ability to move between patches, during seasonal flooding. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Seven species of limax amoebae were isolated into clonal, monoxenic cultures with Aerobacter aerogenes from material collected from freshwater habitats. Studies were made of their trophic structure, nuclear division, cyst structure, some aspects of cytochemistry, and other characteristics. Six new species are described: Vahlkampfia inornata, V. avara, V. jugosa, Hartmannella limacoides, H. vermiformis, and H. exundans. The well-known species Naegleria gruberi (Schardinger, 1899) is re-described on the basis of 8 strains; its flagellated phase was found to be biflagellate, with rare exceptions. A correlation exists between the manner of locomotion and the pattern of nuclear division in the limax amoebae in the family Vahlkampfiidae and those in the genus Hartmannella. Trophic amoebae of all species had a PAS-positive surface layer, altho results with H. vermiformis and H. exundans were less definite than with other species. All species except H. limacoides formed cysts in culture. The cyst walls of all cyst-forming species were strongly PAS-positive, but results of the zinc chloroiodide test for cellulose were negative with the method used. The genus Hartmannella Alexeieff, 1912, is re-defined to include those species which assume a simple, monopodial limax-like form during locomotion and have nuclear division similar to that of metazoan cells and to distinguish it from the genus Acanthamoeba Volkonsky, 1931. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. An electron microscope study of microgametocytes and macrogametes of Eimeria nieschulzi Dieben, 1924 revealed that they lie within vacuoles bounded by a host unit membrane. The vacuole surrounding the microgametocyte contains granular material. The vacuole around the macrogamete is narrower and contains vesicles and membranes. Micropores were seen on the surface of the plasma membrane of microgametocytes and macrogametes. Microtubules were seen in macrogametes. Young microgametocytes and macrogametes have a similar cytoplasmic matrix, mitochondria and nuclei. Glycogen granules apparently develop around vacuoles in both microgametocytes and macrogametes. Glycogen granules were also seen along the margins of parallel bundles of fibers in microgametocytes. As nuclei of the microgametocyte divide, they move to the periphery of the parasite. Three basal bodies, each with 9 fibers in triplet form, develop in association with each nucleus. Microgametes have 2 free flagella and a central short, attached flagellum. Basal granules lie along the outer fibers of the central flagellum. Each microgamete has an elongate mitochondrion in close contact with the nucleus. In macrogametes wall-forming bodies develop in lacunae in the cytoplasm. Smaller dark bodies with areas of low density were also seen.
